Jerri Hartfield, Manager of our local Grand Prairie Apartments, is a wealth of knowledge for our community and has created an environment of respect, self care, hope and loving-kindness to her residents at 500 S. Leach Ave. here in Watonga, Oklahoma. One of the positive implementations she provides to her residents is a clothing drive and food drive. Her location is set up to receive community donations for can goods, non perishable items such as: plates, cups, silverware, cooking utensils, pots & pans, trash cans (kitchen or bathroom size), dressers, chairs, kitchen tables with chairs (they DO NOT take sofas or beds or bed frames) and small microwaves. Each of these items help care for some of her residents that she often considers as extended families.
One idea that has been on Jerri’s heart, is to provide an educational living piece to her long list of caring practices,
“OVEN” DRIVE TO THE COMMONS COMMUNITY AREA
With this added element to her residents care, she would be able to invite guests and encourage community involvement to educate and show residents healthy lifestyles. Her goal is to create an environment of learning: Guests could share a “Make and Take or Show me How to Cook” monthly cooking lesson or host topics like: “how to purchase healthy food on a budget” educational programs. This will give residents confidence in making healthy meals. What a great idea to get behind here in our local community!
Charity from the heart is a form of social justice in which everyone benefits. Giving, whether it be time, money, supplies or loving kindness, is building trusting relationships that tethers the community to unity.

Since this property has received funding in part through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, a certain number of units are set aside for lower income households. Households must earn either less than 50% or 60% of the area median income (depending on the set-aside option chosen by the property owner) to qualify for these units. Rents in these units are capped at a maximum of 30% of the set-aside area median income (adjusted for unit size). Some rental units in this property may not be subject to LIHTC and therefore have higher rents and no maximum household income requirement.
Section 538 is an affordable rural rental housing program for households earning incomes at or below 115% of the area median income.
Since this property has a Project-Based Section 8 contract with HUD, some or all of the rents at this community are based on tenant incomes. Tenants leasing units participating in the Section 8 Project-Based Rental Assistance program typically contribute less than 30% of their adjusted income towards rental costs.
